Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a major new gameplay feature: the Achievements System. By questing, slaying creatures or players, exploring, or collecting items, players will gain Achievements Points and other fun rewards.

Here are some notes fromk developers posted on the Beta Achievements Forum pertaining to how the Achievements system will function and what changes to it are planned.
Retroactive Achievements
Some achievements outside of the Feats of Strength will be rewarded retroactively as well. Devs are still experimenting with ways to detect and reward these.
"We did a pass and checked quests associated with dungeon boss kills. In an upcoming Beta build, you'll see that you'll get some dungeon/raid achievements granted retroactively. Not all dungeons and raids have quests associated with them so some players will still have to re-do the content. For example, there are no quests that validate the boss kills in Slave Pens or Blood Furnace.
Also, keep in mind that in cases such as Onyxia or Zul'jin, not every raid member got quest credit for the quest item drop.
We figured it was better to try to reward credit wherever possible."
Retrieving Destroyed Items
In order to help players complete the relevant achievements, Devs have plans to allow players to re-acquire Key, Tabard, and Vanity Pet items they may have destroyed in the past and have no other way to recover.
"We're making all of the old keys obtainable if you deleted them. Same goes for pets and tabards. For keys, talk to a Locksmith. For Pets, talk to a stable master. For tabards, go to the tabard vendor.
It's important to note that this ONLY works for pets/tabards/keys that cannot be obtained again by the player. This means that if a pet was a rare drop and you deleted it, you'll need to farm for it again."
Achievement Ideas/Suggestions
Below are some of the posts where Devs have responded positively to player suggestions for Achievements. We may see these suggestions added into the system in future builds.
Quote: I've enjoyed tracking down and sometimes camping spawn points for the rare (silver dragon) mobs in game. I suspect there are others as well who would enjoy attaining this achievement.
Upon starting your journey in Wrath of the Lich King, you’ll see a new button on your main action bar. Click that button to bring up the achievements window.
The top of the window displays the total number of points you’ve received for completing achievements. Below, each achievement appears with its name, description, point value, the completion date, and a progress bar (if applicable). Some achievements expand to display a list of individual components, highlighted to show which parts you’ve finished. You can also designate which achievements to track as you play, similar to the existing quest tracker.
